Regional Innovation Fund 2010
The SHA have opened the application process for this years Innovation Fund. Please see the
guidance and application form. Funding is only for this financial year (from 1st November to 31st March) and has to impact upon Primary Care, Management of Long Term Conditions or Mental Health and Learning Disabilities.

The timescale for applications (deadline for submission is Friday 10th September) is tight and so if you have a bid you wish to submit please let David Furley have completed applications as soon as possible as they will need to be signed off by the Chief Executive prior to being submitted to the SHA.

The bidding process is simple initially but for the applications shortlisted will require a presentation at a Dragons' Den to determine which ones will be funded.

Reducing medication errors
In 2009, the NPSA issued Safety in Doses: improving the use of medicines in the NHS after having received 74, 482 medication incident reports in 2007.

    This month’s tool: Value Stream Mapping
    This technique helps achieve service improvements by setting goals to improve service and reduce delays. Using this tool, a cross functional team can produce a visual map of the ‘current state', identifying all the steps in a patient's pathway, and then focus on the ‘future state' which often represents a significant change in the way the system currently operates.

    The technique is described in more detail at the
    NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. Its Cytology improvement guide - achieving a 14 day turnaround time in cytology has case studies in which this technique is used in chapter 15.
